Of all the things that stood out in the 2024 T20 World Cup, USA’s campaign takes the cake. They came in as underdogs, were expected to be blown away. Well, they’ve surprised. Perhaps shocked even. But it was no fluke. Our MI New York pride, Monank Patel, leading the side in an epic chase against Canada, followed up by an even more epic Super Over win over Pakistan, breaks down the buildup, the preparations, the mindset, and the road to the Super Eights in an exclusive chat with MI New York

“It’s a great achievement for the entire team and the USA cricket community. The way we played and carried ourselves in the tournament was outstanding. If you see, different players stood out in different games. Everyone is proud of the way we played in those three weeks,” he said.

For the world, the journey may have begun when an Aaron Jones-powered USA chased down 195 against Canada, but for Monank, it was a camp in February where the foundation was laid. A new coach, a new template, a new belief, and an instant upswing in the results. Ask Bangladesh.

“We had a new coach in Stuart Law, who we had never worked with. We spent a lot of time together as a team in those two series. We prepared ourselves, beat Canada 4-0 and it helped us create momentum for the Bangladesh series. Ahead of the Bangladesh series, the media were talking about it being a one-sided series. But we talked about playing fearless cricket ahead of the World Cup. That is what we wanted to take in. And the way we played against them was outstanding,” he said.

In the three-match T20I series, USA beat Bangladesh 2-1. It was as big an upset as could be. And it was just the start of what was to transpire and come over the next three weeks.

“It was not just beating them. In the first game, we needed 45 runs in three-odd overs, and we pulled it off from there. Those two games were very crucial for us. It gave us a lot of confidence and belief that we could win from any situation, against any team.”

The main deal now – Pakistan in the Group Stage. USA had already done what even the most optimistic of supporters would have been happy with, beating Canada. Just a tough fight would’ve now been enough. Not for Monank though.

“We had a chat before the game, and we said we had nothing to lose,” he said of the Pakistan game. “The pressure was on them. We saw the footages of some of their batsmen, and we knew the matchup was in our favor. For example, Muhammad Rizwan’s wicket, we decided we would bowl him the outswinger, and the second ball he faced, he outside-edged to Steven Taylor. We utilized the conditions really well and we knew 160-165 was a very gettable score.”

Monank is the ultimate pressure-killer. Or a pressure lover. In the chase of 160, at one point, he was batting on a 27-ball 31 soaking it all up. But it was all accounted for. It was all premeditated. And the larger plan began to unveil with consecutive boundaries off Iftikhar Ahmed.

“After the first ten overs, we decided to target certain bowlers. We were targeting the shorter boundaries. I decided to take down Iftikhar if he came on to bowl. We got 11 runs in that over. Shaheen Afridi then came on to bowl, and I pre-planned the whole over and he bowled exactly where I wanted him to bowl. We got another 10-run over we wanted. It gave us momentum.”

Before we knew, he was on 50 off 34 balls. USA had a firm foot in the door. The reverse-swinging ball meant Pakistan clawed back. When it all came down to holding their nerve, USA came through. Huffing, puffing, they took it to the Super Over, and ensured America’s biggest cricketing moment was achieved!

“Even before the game, I was talking to a friend and I was talking about the crucial times when I was put under pressure and I delivered. I told him it was a big occasion against Pakistan, and that is where my best comes out. I manifested it and it just came out.”

It's been a dreamy few months for USA cricket, and now with the second season of Major League Cricket upon us, it’s time to get Monank manifesting all over again. Perhaps a second title!

Eliminator report: A tough night, and sadly, that will be it for 2024

We tried. We fought. But it just wasn’t our night. This stings, and it will for a while, but we are super proud of all the memories our boys gave us this season. Let’s recap the evening.. Another game vs TSK, another Rashid-Monank specialMINY didn’t get off to the best of starts, with Dewald Brevis falling in the first over, and then Nicholas Pooran departing shortly after inside the powerplay. The stars against TSK in the previous game, Monak Patel and Rashid Khan, who’d had a promotion in the batting order this time around, got together at 67/3 in the 11th over. And suddenly, just like that, from a potential 150-run target, to the eventual 163. Rashid, with another quick fifty, upped the ante after Monank fell. Oh, he just loves it here!Faf fifty takes it awayIt was simply his night. Riding his luck, with missed run-outs, edges, and pretty much everything going TSK’s way, skipper Faf du Plessis and fellow opener Devon Conway were a little too clinical, notching up a 101-run opening stand. Nosh gives us a glimmer of hopeAlthough it seemed to be quickly slipping away from us with the asking rate well under control, Nosthush Kenjige got rid of the dangerous Faf, who was the aggressor in that opening partnership, and gave all us MINY fans a slight hope of their being a twist. Alas, it wasn’t to be, with Aaron Hardie shutting the door. “We’ll come back stronger next season”Kieron Pollard, although disappointed at the end with the result, backed the boys to improve and come back as upgraded versions of themselves next year. Although the result might not be what we wanted, the fight was there, and while this loss will sting, it has been a season that we will look back at with pride.

Robbie Peterson: “We just weren’t consistent enough... we’ll come back stronger next year”

Not the finish MI New York would have wanted to their MLC 2024 campaign, crashing out in the Eliminator against the Texas Super Kings. As Head Coach Robbie Peterson came out for the post-match press conference, he looked back at the campaign, had advice to give, and threw some light on the reasons behind the team combination. Excerpts.. Reflections on the gameYou can’t sit and blame our domestic players. All of us, including the international players weren’t consistent enough across this campaign. The players will be disappointed that couldn’t make the final. We showed some glimpses. We could never tie all the skills in one game unfortunately. Credit to TSK, they played very well. Credit to Faf (du Plessis) as well, his captaincy was outstanding tonight. Devon Conway was the rock as he always is for them in this campaign. A lot of learnings have taken place in the last two years. We would like to win every competition but sometimes these events don’t allow you to slip up. We will come back stronger next year. On Monank Patel doing well in the middle-order You have to be adaptable in T20 cricket. Monank got his two fifties coming in the middle order in this tournament.  He is the type of player who can use his experience and leadership. We thought responsibility would fall on his shoulders when he moved down the order with the skillset he possesses. In games you try and counter the opposition, and sometimes you try and send a power-player. No reflection towards his skillset, he played very well in the middle-order and he should consider that in the future. Whether rain made it easier to bat in the second inningsThe rain played a little bit of a role. We won’t use that as an excuse, but we didn’t field well enough. There were seven chances with the run-outs, catches that we should have taken. We still created opportunities to stretch that game. One of those things where you are on the wrong side of the weather. On the pressures of playing in the El ClasicoEverybody knows the rivalry between the MI and the CSK franchise will always be there around the globe. There is a sense of excitement for the guys. There’s a different edge leading to these games. It is a privilege to be involved in these games. Every time you participate, you want to do well. It gives players a lot of joy. Thoughts behind changing the opening combination Sometimes you cannot predict someone’s form. Franchise cricket is pretty ruthless if you don’t get off to a good start. We just felt that Shayan (Jahangir) did well for us last year and we needed a bit of impetus with Dewald Brevis. No reflection on Ruben (Clinton). We just felt that was the combination which would serve us well in the game. They are talented players who will contribute in the future at some point in the MLC. Sometimes tournaments don’t work out well for individuals. They can hold their heads up. They worked hard, they tried hard. They were still great team players off the field. A lot for them to reflect upon and improve. On Steven Taylor and his formWe look at him as a batsman, and off-spin is his hobby. He is drafted as a batsman. His currency is runs at the end of the day. He was probably a bit short there. A lot of conversation on how he can improve has happened behind the scenes. On what the local players need to do to improveFrom a batting perspective, it is going to be tough when you are not facing high quality fast bowling week in and week out, like guys from Australia, South Africa, West Indies. It’s always going to be the challenge for local players. There are guys bowling at serious pace, and it takes a bit of time to adjust to that. It’s not nice to face, so it takes a bit of courage. You’re only going to get better when you face it at training. That’s something the domestic batters don’t have in terms of preparation when they play in the Minor League. They’ve got the taste of it now and there are alternate ways to train for it. Hopefully they can implement it in their training and as MLC progresses, we will see these guys get better and better.
